In 2018 the City of Los Angeles was selected as a winner of the Bloomberg Philanthropies U.S. Mayors Challenge, which incentivized bold and creative new ideas to confront the most complex challenges facing American cities today. L.A. was selected as a winner for its innovative approach to combat the City’s homelessness crisis: the LA ADU Accelerator program. This program partners with homeowners to rent their accessory dwelling units (ADUs) to older adults facing housing insecurity. Eligible and approved homeowners and tenants are paired through a screening and matching process, and landlords receive stable rent payments and dedicated case management support during the three-year program.
