Our Mission Hasn’t Changed
While the elected leadership in Washington is changing, the mission of the Mayor’s Fund is not.
We are committed to continuing to connect Angelenos in danger of becoming homeless to every resource that will help them stay housed. We have not and will not turn away anyone who comes to us for assistance.
Darlene Hunt is a perfect example of the people we help every day. At age 61, she is disabled after being injured on the job and experiencing strokes and heart attacks. She’s still looking for work, but it’s been hard to find anyone who would hire her. To try to make ends meet, she and her brother moved in together. However, during the pandemic, he also lost his job and hasn’t had stable employment since.
They fell behind on rent and were in danger of eviction when they came to We Are LA for assistance. Our team helped Darlene sign up for CalFresh and pharmacy benefits and connected her to our legal partner, Eviction Defense Network. With their help, she was able to negotiate a settlement with her landlord.
Every month, we connect families like Darlene’s to legal assistance, as well as programs like CalFresh and MediCal, which can help them stabilize their household’s income. Our We Are LA team members care deeply about the people they serve. Darlene says they treated her like family. So many of our clients come in feeling helpless and leave with much brighter outlooks, simply because they have a plan and a place to go for guidance. We will continue to offer the compassion and stability that individuals and families at risk of homelessness need to overcome their challenges.
LA Taxpayers Step Up to End Homelessness
A bright spot on Election Day was that nearly 60% of LA County voters supported Measure A. It doubles LA County’s dedicated funding source for homelessness reduction and prevention, which will go a long way to support our goal of preventing, reducing, and ending homelessness.
Celebrating One Year of our Partnership with GroundWorks
Last week, we celebrated the one-year anniversary of our partnership with GroundWorks. Their team is a key part of our We Are LA homelessness-prevention program, and they serve dozens of people and families at risk of eviction every week. Their hard work is one of the biggest components in our success, and we are profoundly grateful for their empathy and professionalism.
Invest in Preventing Homelessness
The Mayor’s Fund is pioneering a city-wide approach to prevent homelessness head on, which Mayor Bass has said is a model for the nation. Our cost to serve each Angeleno through the We Are LA program is $100 per person – a fraction of the expenses related to supporting each resident who becomes unhoused, which are estimated at more than $60,000 per year.
With just over one month left in the calendar year, please consider investing in the Mayor’s Fund’s homelessness prevention model, ensuring that vulnerable Angelenos across the city remain stably housed through the holidays and beyond.
